Suicide MortalityBackground: Suicide rates are rising. In 2013, it was the third leading cause of death in children ages 10-14. It was the second leading cause of death for ages 15-24. Many risk factors for suicide have been found. But it is hard to predict. Evidence is growing that some factors that may make people vulnerable to suicide can be identified before birth or in early childhood. Researchers want to study vulnerability to suicide. They want to look at different kinds of development. These include prenatal, social, behavioral, cognitive, and neurologic. They will do this by linking data from the United States Collaborate Perinatal Project (CPP) to the National Death Index (NDI). The CPP data are from about 50,000 children born to mothers who enrolled in the 1960s. The CPP observed and examined about 60,000 pregnancies. Then it followed the babies from when they were born through age 7. The CPP collected data on things like family and medical history, economic status, and behavior. The NDI has data on the date and cause of death. Objective: To link data from the CPP to the NDI in order to study certain precursors to suicide. Eligibility: Offspring born to women who enrolled in the CPP in 1959-1966 and known to be alive at age 7 (Note: at the start of this study around in 2016, the youngest of those still alive would be 50 and the oldest would be 57 years old). Design: Data on children from the CPP will be submitted electronically to the NDI. It will be encrypted and data from the NDI will be deidentified to protect confidentiality. MAPS Group Therapy Model for Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar DisorderSuicideThis study aims to develop the MAPS(M,Monitoring;A,Assessing;P,Preventing or Reducing Relapse;S,Smart goal setting) group therapy model for bipolar disorder patients as other adjuvant clinical treatment and develop the instruments for evaluating the severity of bipolar symptoms. The investigators insist to provide the psychosocial intervention for bipolar patients in the general hospital and offer appropriative adjuvant intervention except current psychiatric biological treatment. This study is a one-year project. First, the investigators like to translate the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) and the Altman Self-Rating Scale for Mania (ASRM) to Chinese and finish the reliability and validity study. Second, the investigators would like to develop the MAPS group therapy to enhance bipolar patients' insight, increased life quality and decrease suicidal ideation. This study is a case control study. All cases recruit from the psychiatric outpatient department of one medical center. The inclusion criteria are diagnosed as bipolar disorder, age from 18 to 65 and agree to sign the inform consent. The excluded criteria are hard to communicate, with acute psychiatric feature and severe physical illness. The investigators plan to hold the MAPS group three times and predetermine to recruit totally 30 patients as the case group. As to the control group, the investigators also recruit from the psychiatric outpatient department and those who treat as usual by control their gender, age and the same diagnosis as bipolar disorder. The only one different factor between the case group and the control group was attending the MAPS group therapy or not. In MAPS group therapy, two facilitators work with ten clients with twelve weekly sessions and three monthly booster sessions. Self-report rating scales (DASS and ASRM) are completed at the beginning of each session. The investigators use DASS and ASRM to evaluate the severity of bipolar symptoms; BSS for suicidal ideation; SF-36 for life quality. The hypothesis is "patients attended to MAPS group therapy have better symptoms control, lower suicidal ideation, better life quality and less use emergency department or admissions than those who didn't attend the group therapy".
PES Family Support and Follow-Up Program
SuicideThe Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) Family Support and Follow-Up Program is a service delivery intervention that utilizes a multi-component approach to enhance usual care provided to youth and families at the University of Michigan Psychiatric Emergency Services in order to promote youth safety and provide support to families following their visit. During the first phase of intervention, families will receive enhanced usual care by clinical staff along with a family toolkit that includes a youth safety plan and written recommendations for safety monitoring and supporting youth during a crisis. During the second phase of intervention, families will receive the interventions provided during the first phase in addition to caring contacts post discharge, which may occur by phone, text, or email. Caring contacts are meant to provide support, additional education, and problem solving assistance.
A Digital Game Targeting Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Who Report Substance Misuse
Substance MisuseSuicideThe primary aim of this study is to design and develop a digital game that models the process of a safety planning intervention. To do so, the investigators will explore and better understand peer or student perceptions around potential warning signs, coping strategies, and seeking help among youth who may be at greater risk of suicide due to misuse of substances. Focus groups/interviews with adolescents, young adults, adults, and school-based behavioral health providers will be conducted. Findings will inform the development of a digital intervention to reduce the risk of suicide among adolescents who misuse substances. Once a prototype of the game is developed, play-test focus groups with adolescents, college-aged youth, and school-based mental health providers will be conducted to finalize the intervention. Once finalized, the investigators will conduct a pilot study with 60 adolescents aged 13-19 to assess user experience, acceptability and feasibility of the digital game.
Adapting the Suicide Safety Planning Intervention for Delivery to Adolescents in Mozambican Primary...
SuicideAdolescent BehaviorGlobally, suicide is ranked as the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24 years, and more than 75% of all deaths by suicide occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the vast majority of adolescents in LMIC do not have access to mental health care, and contextually appropriate strategies for delivering evidence-based interventions for managing suicide risk are needed to expand services to these areas. In the present study, the investigators will adapt and pilot test the Suicide Safety Planning Intervention for Adolescents (SPI-A) delivered by primary care providers in Mozambique, an LMIC in southeastern Africa.
Peer to Peer Programs for Military Suicide Prevention
SuicideIn the present project the investigators propose to test the efficacy of a peer to peer program entitled Airman's Edge. The Airman's Edge program plans to utilize peer mentors that will be trained in specialized skills designed to impact suicide risk at multiple levels of the military community without creating "extra duties" that increase workload and interfere with mission demands. Peer mentors will introduce primary prevention strategies to their units that target broad-based risk factors across the entire population (i.e., sleep disturbance, social support, meaning in life, firearm safety) with secondary prevention strategies that target individual-level risk factors (i.e., crisis response planning, firearm safety counseling). Peer mentors will complete a structured training process using existing curriculum and procedures that have been tested and refined within military groups. Peers mentors will also participate in monthly consultation calls with the investigative team to receive ongoing support, share resources and lessons learned, and address challenges and barriers to program implementation. The purpose of the Airman's Edge peer to peer program is to influence indicators of suicide risk among military personnel at two levels, group and individual, consistent with the program's hybrid design that combines group-based education and individual-level suicide prevention skills training. The hypotheses are therefore designed to examine outcomes and effects at multiple levels of the community, which could inform subsequent implementation and translational efforts. The following aims are proposed: Aim 1: To test the efficacy of a peer to peer program for the reduction of suicidal behavior among military personnel. Aim 2: To identify moderators and mediators of the peer to peer program's effects on suicidal behavior.
Safety Planning Intervention to Reduce Short Term Risk
SuicideAttemptedThis study will determine the efficacy of Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) compared to receiving risk factors and warning sign information (RWI) in recent suicide attempters during the 6 months following an acute care visit on: (1) suicidal behaviors; (2) mental health/substance use treatment engagement; (3) suicide-related coping strategies; (4) suicidal ideation; and (5) use of means restriction.
Suicide Prevention for Sexual and Gender Minority Youth (Case Series)
SuicideThe overarching goal of this study is to develop a suicide prevention program for sexual-and-gender-minority youth and emerging adults. After development of the intervention program, a case series trial will be conducted to test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and study methods.
Veterans Coping Long-term With Active Suicide
SuicideThe proposed study seeks to test the efficacy of an intervention to reduce suicide behaviors in Veterans. The Veterans Coping Long Term with Active Suicide Program (CLASP-VA) is an innovative, telephone-based intervention that combines elements of individual therapy, case management, and significant other/family therapy and is designed to be integrated into a VA system.
