Overactive Bladder (OAB) Drink Advice Study
Overactive Bladder SyndromeThe researchers want to investigate how fluid intake influences the symptoms of OAB. The researchers will recruit 45 patients with OAB and randomize them (blind) in 3 groups (low/normal/high fluid intake). Patients will follow this drink pattern for 2-5 days, while filling in an standard micturation diary for 2 days. This micturation diary is coupled to: collection of multiple urine samples, urine pH measurements, and a Perception of Intensity of Urgency Scale (PPIUS) scoring table. All this is collected by the patients themselves. Urine samples will be analysed for osmolality by the clinical chemistry department.
Perceptions of Burden in Patients With Late-Stage Cancer and Their Caregivers
Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsChronic Myeloproliferative Disorders9 moreRATIONALE: Gathering information over time about patients' sense of being a burden on their caregiver, and caregivers' sense of burden on themselves, may help doctors learn more about the desire to die in patients with late-stage cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying perceptions of burden in patients with late-stage cancer and their caregivers.
Collecting and Storing Blood Samples From Patients With Cancer
Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsChronic Myeloproliferative Disorders11 moreRATIONALE: Collecting and storing samples of blood from patients with cancer to test in the laboratory may help the study of cancer in the future. PURPOSE: This research study is collecting and storing blood samples from patients with cancer.
Adaptive Behavior Assessment of Men With 49, XXXXY, Klinefelter Syndrome
Klinefelter SyndromeKlinefelter syndrome, a congenital chromosomal abnormality with one or more extra X chromosomes, occurs in out of 400 live male births. The majority of Klinefelter men present with a 47, XXY karyotype. The "poly-X variant", with the 49,XXXXY karyotype is uncommon. This syndrome, where subjects have two or more X chromosomes presents with primary hypogonadism, and, particularly if associated with the 49,XXXXY karyotype, significantly impacts life skills across a variety of dimensions, including areas of communication, community use, functional academics, home/school living, health and safety, leisure, self-care, self direction, and work. Adaptive behavior abnormalities in 46,XXY men are well known and described. In the poly-X variant of the 49,XXXXY karyotype, adaptive behavior abnormalities are expected to be much more significant, making these patients eligible for services and Social Security benefits. In 49,XXXXY men no study to date has examined these areas of inquiry in a large patient population, using a psychometrically sound instrument in a large patient population. Current publications are limited to individual case reports or small case summaries. It is important to study the adaptive behavior in its highly abnormal presentation in 49,XXXXY men in order to learn more about the effect of additional X chromosomes on adaptive skills, which determine how an individual responds to daily demands and in order to develop treatment and training goals.
The Interaction Between Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Viral Proteins and Monocytes...
Severe Acute Respiratory SyndromeSevere acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a new threat to public health since November, 2002. The SARS is highly contagious and is believed to be transmitted by person-to-person through droplet and direct contact. The patients present with fever, chills, cough, myalgia, dyspnea, and diarrhea. The symptoms aggravate in the second week and nearly 40% of the patients develop respiratory failure that requires assisted ventilation. The mortality rate is reported as 6.5%-7%. After several months, the world scientists found the etiology to be a new coronavirus not belonging to the previous coronavirus group I, II and III. The new virus is called SARS associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Although the high morbidity and mortality of SARS occurred in adults, there was rare mortality reported in the children. The report from Hong Kong pointed out that the symptoms of SARS in younger children were milder and the clinical course was not as aggressive as in adults. Therefore, the aim of the project is to design the experiment to see the differences of immunological responses to SARS-CoV protein in healthy younger children, teenagers, and adults. The investigators hope that the result could explain the reason for milder disease in younger children and the immunological pathogenesis of SARS.
Sleep Disordered Breathing in Children With Single Ventricle Physiology
Hypoplastic Left Heart SyndromeObstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome1 moreThis is an exploratory study designed to evaluate the incidence of, and to quantify sleep disordered breathing following stage I Norwood reconstructive surgery. Sleep disordered breathing will be correlated with: Elevations in pulmonary vasculature resistance at the time of Stage II surgery. Risks of death
The Eye in Orbit: UCF Adaption
Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular SyndromeSANSThe goal of this study is to understand the impact of space travel on the eyes. Space flight impacts numerous aspects of ocular anatomy and physiology. Current hypotheses are based on pressure changes within and around the optic nerve. Retinal and choroid blood drainage may be affected by microgravity associated cerebrospinal fluid pressure changes. Recently, a new imaging modality, Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), has been able to reveal micro vascular changes in the retina and choroid. To date, no microgravity ocular imaging tests have been published using OCTA. In this study the researchers aim to describe microgravity circadian choroidal and retinal vasculature using multimodal imaging including OCTA to better understand space associated ocular changes.
Premenstrual Syndrome and Physical Activity Self-Worth
Premenstrual SyndromePremenstrual syndrome (PMS) negatively affects the quality of life of millions of women. PMS is a common cyclic disorder characterized by somatic, cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms that usually occurs in young and middle-aged women, lasts during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and ends with the onset of menstruation.Studies have shown that women with high PMS symptoms are more inactive. Physical activity participation in women affects a wide spectrum of self-perceptions, including knowledge, social, and emotional self-perceptions. By determining which physical, emotional, social and academic/knowledge areas are affected by women, increasing their participation in physical activity can be achieved. The subject of the study is to determine the symptom severity of women with and without premenstrual syndrome and to examine how premenstrual syndrome affects physical activity self-worth.
Mechanical Power and Ventilatory Ratio in ARDS
Acute Respiratory Distress SyndromeMechanical power (MP) and ventilatory ratio (VR) are variables associated with outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In respiratory setting, the optimization of MP should lead to an increase in VR. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: to assess the relationship between MP and VR and to compare the components of MP (ventilatory variables) according to a level of MP (17 J/minute) considered harmful.
Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the 6-item Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms Scale...
Carpal Tunnel SyndromeSymptoms and SignsCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the median nerve that usually cause numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hand and fingers. While definitive diagnosis is made with nerve conduction studies, the patient's history and physical examination findings lead the clinician to the diagnosis of CTS. Using factor analysis and item response theory methodology, Atroshi et al. developed a short 6-item version of the symptom severity scale to ease respondent burden while maintaining the psychometric properties of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire. It has been demonstrated that the 6-item CTS Symptom Scale has good reliability, validity and responsiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and construct validity of the Turkish version of the 6-item CTS symptoms scale for CTS.
