Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin in Temporomandibular Disorders

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Bilateral

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) represent a multifactorial pathological group that gives rise to a varied and complex symptomatology that includes decreased jaw movement, muscle and joint pain, joint crepitation and limitation or functional deviation of the jaw opening. All this is sometimes accompanied by headache and other painful symptoms in the neck musculature, incapacitating for many patients and at considerable public health expense. Intramuscular and intra-articular injections of botulinum toxin are a simple treatment that has proven to be effective in the treatment of the painful symptoms of these disorders, being a therapeutic option in situations of failure of conventional treatments, without presenting adverse effects. Our study presents the preliminary results of twenty patients treated with this therapy

Effectiveness of Vitamin B in Reducing Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Pain

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

The purpose of this study is to determine effectiveness of vitamin B in reducing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) pain. Patients will be randomised to receive the study drug or placebo. The study drug we are using is a combination of vitamin B1(thiamine mononitrate)-242.5mg; vitamin B6(pyridoxineHCl)-250mg, and vitamin B12(cyanocobalamin)-1mg. We will assess patient's pain level, range of jaw movement and record any side effects from using this medication.

Low Level Laser TherapyTemporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

This study was to determine the effect of conventional therapy and low level laser therapy on pain and function in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. sixty patients with myofascial pain syndrome of TMJ are randomly classified into two groups with thirty patients in each group; Group I received traditional exercise. Group II received low level laser therapy in addition to traditional exercise. All outcome measures including Pain and function, were evaluated before and after the treatment program.

Botulinum Toxin Versus Placebo Injections to Temporalis and Masseter Muscles

PainHead4 more

This study aims to determine whether the injection of botulinum toxin A or placebo (unpreserved 0.9% sodium chloride) into the masseter and temporalis muscles provides pain relief and improved jaw function in those who suffer from myofascial pain disorder. The study hypothesis is that botulinum toxin A injection is superior to placebo. The specific research questions are: Is the injection of botulinum toxin A superior to placebo for the improvement in pain? Is the injection of botulinum toxin A superior to placebo for the improvement in function or quality of life (QOL)? Are there any adverse effects that result from injection of botulinum toxin A or placebo into the masseters and temporalis muscles? Limited data exists to support the use of botulinum toxin A in the management of myofascial pain disorder of the masticatory region. Botulinum toxin A is not FDA approved for intra-muscular injection within the masticatory region. Its use in the masticatory region is considered off-label but performed without significant known complications. This study will provide the opportunity to quantitate and qualitate any complications in a large prospective sample of patients.

Motor Cortex as a Research & Therapeutic Target in TMD

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

The investigators are doing a study to learn about the effects of a type of low-energy non-surgical electrical brain stimulation (HD-tDCS) on chronic pain in people's jaw joints. Disorders in these joints are called temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMD.

Effects of the Use of Occlusal Splint on the Postural Balance of Individuals With Temporomandibular...

Temporomandibular Disorders

To investigate the effects of the use of occlusal splint over postural balance in individuals with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder. The research group consists of 49 patients (36 getting occlusal splints and 13 as control group) between 18 and 75 years old, both genders, diagnosed as temporomandibular disorder (TMD) by RDC/TMD questionnaire and magnetic resonance imaging of the temporomandibular joints. The research is a randomized, controlled, prospective clinical study with intervention. Postural equilibrium will be evaluated by means of a force plate. In the randomization, the splinted group was under an occlusal-stability criterion as well as advised under therapeutic exercises while the control group got only orientation about therapeutic exercises. After 12 weeks, the groups were re-evaluated. The results will be analyzed by categorical data using absolute and relative frequencies as well as continuous data using average, median, standard deviation, 25 and 75 percentiles, besides minimum and maximum values; comparison between the times by non-parametric Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney and ANOVA tests with a threshold of significance of 0.05.

Effect of the Method Pilates in Women With Temporomandibular Disorders

PainTemporomandibular Joint Disorders

Introduction: the influence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) related to postural changes are yet no consensus, but it is believed that the imbalances of a system can influence another. Several techniques have been used to treat TMD and its associated problems, however there is a paucity of studies evaluating the effects of global treatments, such as Pilates, in individuals with TMD literature. Objective: To evaluate changes in the level of pain, the severity of TMD, the EMG activity of masticatory muscles and posture of young women undergoing training in Pilates, as well as correlating postural changes, pain level, severity of TMD and EMG activity of masticatory muscles. A randomized clinical trial with blinded assessors will be held. 40 patients divided randomly into two groups will be assessed, the control group (CG) who receive conventional treatment with occlusal splint and intervention group (IG), which in addition to conventional treatment will undergo Pilates sessions. Both groups will be formed for women aged 18 to 35 years with TMD and pain. The IG will receive treatment with the Pilates Method for 15 weeks with frequency of twice weekly and use occlusal splint as directed by the dentist. The CG will make use of occlusal splint alone. At the beginning and end of the 15 weeks the individuals are evaluated to verify the presence of TMD, TMD severity, pain, EMG evaluation of masticatory muscles and body posture. Data will be analyzed statistically.
