CRFB002D2301: The core study was designed to confirm the efficacy and safety of ranibizumab (0.5 mg) as adjunctive therapy when added to laser photocoagulation and/or mono-therapy in patients with visual impairment due to diabetic macular edema. CRFB002D2301E1: A 24 month open-label extension study for participants who completed the 12 month core study evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of ranibizumab (0.5 mg) as symptomatic treatment for visual impairment due to diabetic macular edema.

This study will investigate the effect of enhanced visual and cross-modal environments upon the visual attentiveness of multiply handicapped children diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). Research Hypothesis Adapted visual environments which present controlled auditory, tactile, proprioceptive or contrasting visual background stimulation will enhance the visual attentiveness to a given visual stimulus of children diagnosed with CP and CVI. Systematic, repetitive, visual stimulation over time, improves the visual attentiveness and/or visual-motor responses of CP-CVI children. The analysis of additional behavioral responses to visual stimuli is a critical component in evaluating the perceptual development of visual attention in CP-CVI children. Use of Noldus: The Observer, an advanced objective computerized observation program, will enable precise detection of the neurobehavioral responses of the participants. Both overt and covert responses will be observed, analyzed and correlated to identify the level of attention of each participant.

As a subtype of major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or winter depression causes severe reductions in both quality of life and productivity and results in high morbidity and frequent sick leave (1). SAD is a prevalent disorder with rates as high as 3-5% in central European countries and 8-10% in Scandinavian countries. In our recent screening survey among persons with severe visual impairment or blindness (visual acuity < 6/60), we found a strikingly high prevalence of SAD of 17 % compared to 8% in the fully sighted control group. Persons with maintained light perception had a highly increased SAD prevalence of 18 % whereas no light perception (NLP) respondents had an SAD prevalence of 13 %. Light is unquestionably of great importance in the development and treatment of SAD. It is suggested that a reduced retinal sensitivity to light leads to sub-threshold light input to the brain and consequently to the development of SAD. The novel retinal non-visual photoreceptors, the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), are involved in the regulation of circadian rhythm and mood and their function are in part independent of the function of the classical rod and cone photoreceptors which form the basis of conscious visual perception. Function of the ipRGCs can be assessed by chromatic pupillometry where the sustained pupillary contractions following blue light stimulation (PIPR) is the main outcome. In persons with SAD without eye disorder the function of the ipRGCs is reduced. We here wish to investigate associations between ipRGC function and SAD symptoms, circadian profile and treatment response to light therapy in persons with visual impairment. Persons with visual impairment (SAD and non-SAD) are assessed for ipRGC function with chromatic pupillometry, for seasonal mood variation by interview and questionnaire and for diurnal melatonin secretion by saliva analysis summer and winter. In winter SAD participants are treated with daily morning bright light for 6 weeks. Reduction in depression scores and tolerability is recorded.

This is an observational study in which only data are collected from people who have already been prescribed aflibercept 8 mg by their own doctors. In this study, data from adults with visual impairment due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) or diabetic macula edema (DME) will be collected and studied. Visual impairment is any degree of vision loss that affects a person's ability to perform daily activities. nAMD is an eye disorder that causes vision loss due to the growth of abnormal blood vessels that leak blood or retinal fluid into the macula (the central part of the retina). nAMD is a leading cause of vision loss for people aged 50 and older. DME is a diabetes-related eye disorder. In DME, the macula swells up due to fluid leakage from damaged blood vessels, resulting in vision problems. Aflibercept 8 mg is a drug that is injected into the eye. It works by blocking a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which causes abnormal growth and leakage of blood vessels at the back of the eye. Aflibercept 8 mg has been submitted for approval for the treatment of visual impairment due to nAMD and DME based on the results from 2 studies called PHOTON and PULSAR. This study will begin once approval is obtained. Currently, no real-world data are available for aflibercept 8 mg. The main purpose of this study is to collect more information about how well aflibercept 8 mg injection works in people with nAMD and DME. This study will include participants who have not received any prior treatment for nAMD or DME and participants who have. The main information that researchers will collect: the change in vision test scores called the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after 12 months of treatment. Data will be collected from November 2023 to August 2027 and will cover a period of up to 24 months per participant. The data will be collected using medical records and by interviewing the patients during regular visits that take place in routine practice. Researchers will observe participants from the first injection of aflibercept 8 mg until the end of the observation. In this study, only available data from regular visits will be collected. No visits or tests are required as part of this study.

Problem Solving Training and Low Vision Rehabilitation

Low Vision

Vision loss can result in feelings of frustration, helplessness, anxiety, depression, and anger, which compromise a person's activities of everyday living. While emotional distress may resolve in some persons without intervention, unmanaged and persistent distress places the person at risk for continued decrements in health status and the potential development of more severe conditions (i.e., depression, poor health outcomes). Persons with low vision will be recruited and randomly assigned to either an innovative, problem-solving training (PST) intervention group designed specifically for persons with low vision or a sham intervention/control group. Primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline prior to intervention and at 3 month follow-up, 7 month follow-up, 12 month follow-up, and 24 month follow-up by a research interviewer masked to participants' randomization. This project will: (1) demonstrate how specified physical and emotional outcomes of persons with low vision change across time, (2) evaluate the effectiveness of a PST intervention that will be delivered to persons with low vision; and (3) identify persons with low vision who are at risk for adverse emotional and health outcomes.

This study will determine if the interdisciplinary team low vision rehabilitation program is more effective than basic low vision care provided by an optometrist working alone in improving visual reading ability in veterans with macular diseases and best corrected visual acuity of 20/50 to 20/200.
