Patients who develop macular diseases have several clinical complications,such as central vision loss, the central scotoma of the visual field, the decrease of reading speed and fixation stability. At present, there is still no satisfactory effect in the prevention and treatment of advanced macular disease. A new rehabitation strategy named microperimetric biofeedback training has been shown to be effective in improving patients' visual appearance, but there is no consensus regarding the optimal methodology and standard of practice. Therefore, we designed a prospective clinical study to verify the effectiveness of MBFT and to determine an optimal plan.

Falls are one of the most serious public health concerns for seniors, with significant medical and economic consequences. This concern is even higher in patients with peripheral field loss due to glaucoma because of the patients' compromised visual input. The investigators' project proposes an innovative, entertaining, easily accessible and enjoyable intervention for improving mobility and postural control function in glaucoma patients with peripheral vision loss, who are more prone to falls and suffer from fear of falling. The new intervention examined in this project can be implemented in current vision and balance rehabilitation programs, and may benefit patients with different types of visual impairment to minimize their risk of falls and improve their quality of life.

A yoga intervention that is integrative and evidence-based will benefit the blind population through effective treatments and prevention of secondary symptoms as well as serve to inform rehabilitation specialists, educators, and clinicians in the future.

The present study provided additional efficacy and safety data for 0.5-mg ranibizumab using as needed (PRN) dosing over 24 months in patients with visual impairment due to macular edema secondary to Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO). Spectral domain high-definition optical coherence tomography (OCT) images was analyzed to gain insights into predictive factors for disease progression and the possibility of reduced monitoring was assessed in Year 2. The results of this open-label study provided long-term safety and efficacy data to further guide recommendations on the use of ranibizumab in this indication.

Project Magnify - A Comparison of Two Strategies to Improve Reading Ability

The purpose of Project Magnify is to determine which of the two current strategies (large print versus optical aids) for helping visually impaired students improve their reading abilities works better. Our hypothesis is that optical aids work better than providing the student with large print materials. Since large print materials are of one size only, and the level of visual impairments among students varies greatly, it seems apparent that large print materials will work well for some students, but not for all. An optical aid designed for each individual student's level of impairment seems to hold more promise in helping each student reach their maximum level of performance. Although Project Magnify is designed to increase reading abilities, it is expected that students will also develop greater independence and confidence in home and community activities that require the use of vision.

Spectacles for Patients With Down Syndrome

This study tests the hypothesis that objectively derived spectacle prescriptions based on wavefront aberration measurements of the eyes of individuals with Down syndrome can provide an improvement in visual acuity over that obtained with spectacle prescriptions based on standard clinical prescribing techniques. The objectively derived prescriptions are derived using strategies to optimize retinal image quality as measured by image quality metrics, and thus these prescriptions will be referred to as metric-derived.
