Thorcolumbar Kyphosis Patients With GERD

The investigator aimed to investigate the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) along with esophageal motility in thoracolumbar kyphotic patients who meet surgical spinal correction criteria. Because some patients refused to receive spinal correction surgery, our patients divided into surgical and non-surgical treatment (for example: brace) groups. The investigator intended to use (1) multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring to assess the height, non-acidic and acidic regurgitation of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (2) high resolution impedance manometry (HRIM) to esophageal motility between pretreatment and posttreatment period. (3) the questionnaire to evaluate the reflux-related symptoms: the frequency scale for the symptoms of GERD (FSSG), gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) and Carlsson-Dent self-administered questionnaire (QUEST)

Correction for Kyphotic Posture for Improving Balance in Cerebral Palsy

Children with spastic diplegia are at an increased risk of spinal deformities. The most common types of these spinal deformities are scoliosis and kyphosis. Thoracic hyper-kyphosis may adversely affect balance in children with cerebral palsy . The treatment approaches for hyper-kyphosis involved both conservative and surgical treatments. The Conservative approach includes corrective exercises, positioning, and spinal braces. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of conservative orthotic management for kyphotic posture on balance control, and fall risk in cerebral palsied children of spastic diplegia.

Study of Hyperkyphosis, Exercise and Function-SHEAF

We propose to conduct a randomized, controlled trial among 100 men and women aged 60 or older with hyperkyphosis to an exercise intervention that includes kyphosis-specific spinal muscle strengthening exercises compared to a usual care control group. The study will be conducted in five waves,with 10 participants in the exercise intervention and 10 participants in the control group in each wave.

Individuals who undergo spine surgery often have a significant loss of blood and may require multiple blood transfusions. Research has shown that epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) may reduce the amount of blood lost during surgery, which would decrease the number of blood transfusions required. This study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of EACA at reducing blood loss and the need for blood transfusions in individuals undergoing spine surgery.

Physical Therapy Exercises in Hyperkyphosis

Hyperkyphosis

This proposal is a single center preliminary prospective cohort trial that evaluates patients with hyperkyphosis. Participants will receive physical therapy exercises and be followed for the above outcome measures over time. The treatment arm will receive training in one-time training in kyphosis-specific exercises. It is hypothesized that participants receive physical therapy exercises will demonstrate improved outcome measures over time. Also, it is hypothesized that participants who receive kyphosis-specific exercises will demonstrate significantly improved perceived quality-of-life and significantly reduced pain, compared to participants who receive generalized back exercises after 6 months. Also, it is hypothesized that a kyphosis-specific SAQ will demonstrate satisfactory test-retest reliability and concurrent validity.
