Acceptance and Usability of an App Promoting Healthy Behaviours Amongst Young Women at Increased...

Breast CancerOverweight and Obesity8 more

It is estimated that around 20% of breast cancers (BC) in the UK are preventable through adherence to appropriate health behaviours, i.e., healthy diet, physical activity, limited alcohol, not smoking, and that women at increased risk of BC could benefit from greater decreases in risk than the general population via health behaviour changes. Young women (age <35 years) who are at increased risk of developing BC currently receive little or no information regarding health behaviours and BC risk, or support for behaviour change. This feasibility study aims to explore whether a novel app is acceptable to women at increased risk and could potentially engage them with improved health behaviours which could reduce their future risk of BC.

#BabyLetsMove Physical Activity Feasibility Trial

Pregnancy RelatedAdolescent Obesity7 more

Black adolescents who are pregnant represent a high-risk and understudied perinatal population in health research. Adolescent pregnancy (<20 years) is disproportionately prevalent among Blacks compared with Whites and is a prominent risk factor for obesity. Fortunately, metabolic consequences of increasing physical activity coupled with minimal sedentary time can mitigate biological imperils and behavioral interventions targeting perinatal populations have demonstrated efficacy for this approach. Intervention studies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentarism among Black, perinatal adolescents in disadvantaged, rural settings may be a promising strategy to prevent obesity and reduce disparities. In the proposed study, investigators will assess the feasibility and acceptability of #BabyLetsMove, a mobile health intervention targeting three behavioral goals: (1) limit TV time to less than 2 hours a day (sedentary behavior); (2) take 10,000 steps or more per day (physical activity); and (3) do 20 minutes or more of structured activity like prenatal yoga or dance videos per day (exercise). In the #BabyLetsMove feasibility trial investigators aim to conduct a single-arm, 4-week pilot with 20 Black adolescents (15- to 19-years) enrolled in Mississippi's Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to test the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. Participants will receive one text message per day for 4-weeks targeting behavior change strategies and two health coaching sessions via mobile phone; an introduction session in week one and a problem-solving session in week three. Investigators will also use qualitative interviewing with additional adolescents (n=20) to solicit user feedback regarding the acceptability of intervention content and materials. Finally, in preparation for a pilot study using an effectiveness-implementation hybrid study design, investigators will conduct a pre-implementation evaluation using quantitative surveying (n=6 surveys) with WIC providers (n=60) to better under the culture and climate of WIC. Investigators hypothesize the #BabyLetsMove intervention will be acceptable to adolescents and a future pilot randomized controlled trial will be feasible. Investigators also anticipate identifying modifiable barriers and facilitators to implementing the intervention through WIC, which will help to design an implementation strategy with a high likelihood for uptake by WIC.

Breakfast for Young Females

Overweight and ObesityOverweight Adolescents1 more

Investigators will test the health effects of eating a dairy-based protein-rich breakfast or isocaloric breakfast and performing regular physical exercise training for 12 weeks in young overweight women (2 x 2 factorial design). Measurements of body composition, physical fitness, metabolic health parameters, faeces and urine metabolites, and food diary will be collected.

Westlake Precision Nutrition Study

HealthyOverweight and Obesity

This is a dietary intervention study, which aims to explore different diet challenges for glucose metabolism, including carbohydrates and intermittent fasting (IF) dietary pattern. Considering the glucose responses to the same food are largely heterogeneous among people, this study integrates the concepts of precision nutrition and N-of-1 design. The study also aims to explore differences in brain structure and function between participants with different Body Mass Index (BMI) from the perspective of gut-brain axis.

Resistance Training in Adults With Obesity

Overweight and Obesity

The purpose of this project is two-fold: (1) to assess if two different resistance training protocols elicit different responses in the acute phase and (2) to assess if the same two different protocols will elicit different long-term responses on muscular strength, body composition and cardiometabolic health. The project will include 30 adults with obesity (defined as BMI ≥ 30 or abdominal obesity according to the International Diabetes Federation). In the acute phase blood lactate, heart rate, enjoyment and perceived exertion will be assessed after the two resistance training protocols. In addition, the mean 24-h blood glucose concentration after exercise will be compared between the two protocols. For the long-term effects blood markers of cardiometabolic health, blood pressure, body composition, objectively measured physical activity and physical fitness will be assessed before and after the intervention. Also, perceived health-related quality of life will be assessed before and after the intervention.

Trial of a New Online Programme for Physical Activity and Healthy Eating.

Overweight/Obesity

Many healthy lifestyle interventions have been developed to help people change their activity and diet, lose weight and thus reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular disorders (CVD). However, these interventions often fail to engage their target audience, which undermines their effectiveness in changing behaviour and health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a self-directed, website-based intervention to promote physical activity and healthy dietary behaviours. The intervention frames health information from a novel perspective, which our previous work has indicated can help to promote interest in the health information and improve attitudes, self-efficacy and motivation towards physical activity and healthy dietary behaviours. The intervention comprises a website of information resources and personal recording areas to set goals and monitor activity and diet, weekly emails and pedometers. In this trial we aim to see whether the intervention has any impact on people's physical activity and diet, as well as their risk of developing CVD and T2DM. The intervention will be compared with a control condition in which participants will be shown standard resources available on NHS websites. Overweight/obese (BMI 25 - 39.5) males and females aged 35-74 years will be recruited from the community. The active intervention will last 6 weeks (during this period participants will receive weekly emails from the research team) and there will be a 6-week follow-up phase (in which participants will still have access to the website but contact from the research team). Activity, diet, disease risk markers and psychological antecedents of behaviour will be assessed at baseline, post-intervention (6-weeks) and post follow-up (12- weeks).
