Generalized Chronic Periodontitis

A single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial was done to assess the periodontal status of the individuals and the presence of red complex microorganisms (RCM) such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas.gingivalis and Tannerella.forsythia in the subgingival tissues of periodontal pockets at baseline followed by the application of mangostana gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing. The periodontal parameters and RCM were again assessed at 3rd month and compared with the placebo group.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Plus Low-dose Aspirin Daily Supplementation in Surgical Therapy to Treat Aggressive...

Residual DiseaseAggressive Periodontitis

The aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial of superiority will be to evaluate the effect of 3 g of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and 100 mg of aspirin daily supplementation over a period of 180 days as adjunct to surgical therapy of residual pockets from patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis. Probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival index and concentration of microorganisms and cytokines at baseline, 3, and 6 months after the procedure will be evaluated.

The Effect of Lovastatin Gel in the Treatment of Chronic Periodontitis

Alveolar Bone LossChronic Periodontitis2 more

Aim: dis double-blind split-mouth clinical trial study was performed to evaluate teh clinical and radiographic effect of local delivery of lovastatin gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) in teh treatment of chronic periodontitis. Method and Materials: 15 patients with two mandibular molar teeth with probing depth (PD)≥3 mm, clinical attachment level (CAL)≥3 mm and bone loss more than 3 mm according to parallel periapical x-ray and distance from CEJ to alveolar crest, were selected.Totally 24 mandibular molars were selected for teh study. Clinical periodontal parameters included PD, CAL, bleeding index(BI), plaque index(PI) were recorded for teh selected teeth at baseline and at 1,3 and 6 months. Radiographic assessments were performed at baseline and after 6 months. At one side teh pockets around randomly selected molar were injected with a blunt syringe filled with lovastatin gel 1.2%( case group=B), and on teh other side, teh pockets were filled with a placebo gel by a blunt syringe ( control group=A).Two-way repeated measure ANOVA test and T-test were used for statistic analysis Spss 23.( P<0.05) was considered significant.

The Effect of Tongue Cleaning in Periodontitis Patients

PeriodontitisTongue Coating

The aim of this study was to examine in periodontitis patients with visible tongue coating the changes in microbial load (aerobic and anaerobic) of the 14 day use of a tongue scraper versus the use of a regular toothbrush to clean the tongue.

Use of the Ozone in Periodontal Treatment

Chronic Periodontitis

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinicaland laboratory (as oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory mediators) effects of the use of gaseous ozone in periodontal treatment in addition to scaling and root planning. The study population consisted of 40 patients with CP (chronic periodontitis). It was performed with two groups; The Test Group, and the Control Group. SRP plus gaseous ozone [1 W (100 mJ, 10 Hz)] was applied to the Test Group. The Control Group, on the other hand, had only SRP.The clinical periodontal parameters were performed and saliva samples were taken before SRP (baseline) and 1 month after treatment. The periodontal examination involved assessing the plaque index, gingival index , probing depth, and clinical attachment level. The total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, nitric oxide, 8-hidroxi-deoksiguanosine, myeloperoxidase, glutathione, malondialdehyde and transforming growth factor-beta levels were determined in the saliva samples.

Efficacy of Amoxicillin-metronidazole Compared to Clindamycin in Patients With Periodontitis and...

PeriodontitisPeriodontal Pocket1 more

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth, usually caused by specific or groups of microorganisms that results in the progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. the objective of periodontitis treatment is to reduce the number of periodontal pathogens. However, there is not an agreement in the use of systemic antibiotics in patients with diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to determine the efficacy of amoxicillin/metronidazole compared to clindamycin during non-surgical treatment of periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients and methods In this double-blind, randomized clinical trial, a total of 42 patients with chronic periodontitis and type 2 diabetes were included in a 24-months follow-up. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either amoxicillin/metronidazole or clindamycin every for 7 days. Clinical determinations (depth of probing, bleeding at the probe and plaque index) were performed to determine the extent and severity of periodontitis before and after the pharmacological treatment. The intra-group differences were calculated with Wilcoxon rank test. The inter-group differences were calculated with Mann-Whitney test. Sex, bacterial plaque, and bleed to the sounding were summarized using proportions and analyzed with the chi-square method. In all analyses, a P-value of <0.05 (two tailed) was considered statistically significant

Comparison of Healing of Apical Periodontitis in Periodontally Diseased and Healthy Patients.

Apical Periodontitis

Periodontal health may jeopardize the success of endodontic treatment.Intraorifice barrier apart from enhancing probability of success of endodontic treatment may also augment periodontal therapy as intra pulpal infection is known to contribute in worsening of periodontal health by promoting marginal bone loss and pocket formation. This study compared the apical healing in healthy and periodontally compromised teeth and evaluated the effect of intra orifice barrier and base in the healing of apical periodontitis.

GCF HIF-1α, VEGF and TNF-α Levels in G-AgP Patients Before and After Periodontal Treatment.

Aggressive PeriodontitisGeneralized1 more

Hypoxia-inducible angiogenic pathway involving hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumour necrosis factor- alpha (TNF-α) may regulate the several biological processes related to inflammation. Generalized aggressive periodontitis (G-AgP) is a rare but highly destructive form of inflammatory periodontal disease. The present study aimed to assess the effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment on gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) HIF-1α, VEGF and TNF-α levels in G-AgP patients. 20 G-AgP and 20 periodontally healthy subjects were enrolled. At baseline, GCF samples were collected and whole mouth clinical periodontal parameters were recorded. G-AgP patients received non-surgical periodontal treatment. Clinical parameters and GCF cytokines were re-measured at 1 and 3 months after treatment. GCF HIF-1α, VEGF and TNF-α levels were analyzed by ELISA. Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests.
